IN the context of English language learning, academic writing is an important aspect of higher education, which can prepare students to interact with complex texts and contribute to academic discourse. Students are expected to develop good academic writing skills, which include the ability to organize ideas, use correct grammar, and construct arguments logically and systematically. However, many students experience difficulties in achieving this goal. Factors that affect their writing ability include a lack of habit of writing in English, low motivation to learn, and limited vocabulary and understanding of sentence structure.

Due to these limitations, students need tools to facilitate their writing process. One tool that is often used in their writing process is AI translation tools such as Google Translate, Deepl, Oxford, etc. The use of AI translation tools is becoming increasingly common among students and educators, especially in the era of globalization, where access to information in various languages
is very important. These tools allow users to translate text instantly, thereby facilitating a broader understanding of the material and supporting the learning process. Several studies have also shown that AI translators can help students expand their vocabulary and understand sentence structure in the target language.

AI translators are still popular among students because they have proven to be accurate in their use. This shows that AI translation tools are considered effective tools in the process of learning English in the classroom. As one of the developments in technology, AI translators make it easier for students to translate texts from one language to another so that they can understand information from international sources, which is especially useful in learning English. Despite having weaknesses such as the need to improve grammar and logical structure of translations, learners continue to use translation tools because of their advantages in facilitating learning and completing assignments. Therefore, AI translation tools are still widely used because of their advantages and usefulness.

AI is known for its ease of access and use, which makes it popular among students, especially in the context of English as a foreign language (EFL) education. AI translators are increasingly available and offer a variety of features, such as text, document, and voice translation, as well as a camera function for translating text in images. Several studies show that many students find
benefits in the quality of their writing when using AI translation tools. Based on this information, although AI has advantages in terms of ease of use and features, there are still challenges faced by students in terms of translation accuracy and context to ensure that the results are truly in line with the text to be translated.

From the author's point of view, AI translation tools should be viewed as supporting tools rather than complete solutions in academic writing. Although these tools help students overcome language barriers, especially in the early stages of writing, over-reliance on translation can hinder the development of independent writing skills. Students may become accustomed to translating ideas directly from their native language rather than learning to think and construct sentences in English. Therefore, it is crucial that AI translation tools be used as a learning aid, not as a substitute for actual language development.

AI translation tools can be very useful when integrated into a guided writing process. For example, students can use AI translation tools to generate initial drafts or explain unfamiliar vocabulary, followed by self-editing and feedback from teachers. This process encourages students to critically evaluate the AI tool's output, identify inaccuracies, and revise their writing accordingly. Through this reflective practice, students not only improve the quality of their academic writing but also develop a greater awareness of grammar, sentence structure, and academic conventions.

Furthermore, ethical issues related to the use of AI translation tools in academic writing should not be overlooked. The use of AI-generated translations without proper revision or acknowledgment can raise issues of academic integrity. Students need to understand the line between acceptable assistance and inappropriate reliance on AI. Therefore, educators play an important role in providing clear guidelines on how to use AI translation tools responsibly, such as emphasizing the development of original ideas, proper citation, and critical engagement with AI results.

The use of AI translation tools can also promote inclusion in academic writing, especially for students with lower English proficiency. These tools help reduce anxiety and cognitive load by allowing students to focus more on content development rather than struggling with language forms. When students feel more confident in expressing their ideas, they are more likely to actively participate in academic writing assignments and engage with complex topics. However, this inclusivity must be accompanied by targeted instruction on how to critically revise AI-generated translations, ensuring that students gradually develop the ability to write independently and accurately in English.

In conclusion, although AI translation tools offer significant advantages in supporting academic writing for English language learners, their effectiveness depends heavily on how they are used. When used wisely and critically, these tools can boost students' confidence, expand their vocabulary, and deepen their understanding of academic language conventions. However, over reliance on automatic translation can reduce students' opportunities to develop original thinking, self-editing skills, and deeper linguistic competence. This highlights the importance of the teacher's role in guiding students to evaluate, revise, and reflect on the results produced by AI rather than passively accepting them. Therefore, a balanced approach that combines AI assistance with pedagogical guidance, moral support, and student reflection is crucial. Educators should encourage the ethical and responsible use of AI tools by integrating them into the writing process as learning aids, not shortcuts.
